Detailed letter to his father, also Ogden Hoffman, Esq., of Wall Street. Discusses legal issues, including progress of his practice and points of a complicated admiralty case, and criticizes Southern attorneys. Expresses concern about the absence of any extensive libraries and the lack of qualified applicants for the district judgeship which he would shortly fill.

Ogden Hoffman was born October 16, 1822 in New York, the son and grandson of accomplished lawyers in that state. He graduated from Columbia College in 1840 and commenced the study of law, after which he established practice in New York City for three years. Hoffman arrived in San Francisco on May 16, 1850 and opened a law office; in March of 1851 he was appointed United States District Judge for the Northern District of California by President Millard Fillmore.
